Video Transcript for Let’s Check Out the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II

Randy: Hey guys, Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox line of hitch immobilizers. Now, these work out great in a lot of situations. Any time you're using an accessory in a receiver tube opening and it doesn't have an anti-rattle device on it, basically you get a lot of movement. Especially with cargo carriers, we get a lot of side to side movement, that weight transferring back and forth. Now before we get to the installation process, let's take a look at some of the test course footage before and after. Essentially, before we get this installed, you're going to see this cargo carrier move side to side quite a bit.

We've got it loaded down with about 120 pounds. That's when we're doing the slalom. As we go over the bumps, you'll see this back end tip up quite a bit. Now, the cargo carrier's going to have a little bit of that anyway, but we're eliminating all of that from the shank, so it keeps everything much more stable. Now you'll see in the after-footage, all that side to side movement is completely eliminated. Once we get into the bumps, you can see there's still a little bit there from the actual cargo carrier tolerance, but we've got nothing coming from the hitch. Now regardless of whether you're using a 2" hitch or 2-1/2" hitch, or what we've got installed here going from a 2-1/2" hitch with an adapter to a 2" accessory, they're all going to work the same way.

This part with the key stock comes in on the backside. Then this U-bolt you can see, as we tighten that down, it pulls down on the accessory. This U-bolt pulls over. That's going to lock it right into the side of our receiver tube opening. Especially when we're using adapters like this, there's so much slop in that system, everything moves side to side.

You can see it's nice, heavy duty steel construction with a black powder coat finish. Blue Ox always makes good products. Then we've got the zinc-coated U-bolts. They use locking Whiz nuts here. As we get everything tightened down, we really don't have to worry about it coming back apart.

Just does a great job in getting that set. The 2" by 2" version looks identical. This is the 2-1/2 by 2-1/2. Basically, it just takes all that discomfort and all that play and that movement out of the equation so you don't have to deal with it anymore. Now another option's the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch. This one, where the Blue Ox doesn't have an 1-1/4" fit, does have an 1-1/4" fit. Has a 2" and a 2-1/2" fit. Basically, this one, this loop goes down around the hitch. This bar is going to come down and press down on the item. Now I like this one quite a bit. On really heavy loads, on your really heavy trailers, or in really heavy flat tow setups, maybe you're hauling a 1500 4x4 Ram, it gets pretty heavy. This one only eliminates the up and down. It eliminates most of the side to side, but as items get really heavy, there is still a little bit of transfer or a little bit of motion side to side. I really like the Quiet Hitch. I think it does a great job. But for total containment, I think the Blue Ox is just a little bit better. Now for all of immobilizers, the installation process is going to be the same. This is the one that fits the 2-1/2" hitch down to a 2" product or 2" accessory. You've got the small lips here. It's going to sit in behind the lip of our hitch. We want to bring it right out to the edge of it. We've got a U-bolt that's going to go in this way. Place our nuts on there. Then we've got our U-bolt that's going to come in from the top. Same thing, throw our nuts on there. Now we want to grab a 9/16" socket and we're going to start tightening these down. It's going to help to pull over on the shank and also pull down on the shank just to help us ensure that we got a great hold on them. Now we're going to grab our torque wrench, want to get all four of those torqued down.As you guys can see, this takes care of a very common problem that we have. I really like this one. I like that it has the total containment on both sides. Really helps to eliminate that movement we experience. I think if you're having that issue or if you've got heavier items that you're loading up and you can feel that transfer, I think it's a great idea to pick one up.

  • Do You Have an Anti-Rattle Device for My 2 1/2" Receiver with Adapter for My 2" Shank?
Hello Dave, I do have an option that will work for your setup, but it is not part of our etrailer brand line. The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III for 2-1/2" Hitch with 2" Adapter # BX88312 is designed specifically for situations like yours, where you are using a 2-1/2" receiver along with an adapter for a 2" accessory. This stabilizer will help eliminate the rattle and movement that can happen when combining different sizes, giving you a much more secure and quiet connection while...

  • Usable Length of Threaded Bolt Included w/ Curt C22321 Anti-Rattle Kit
The usable length of the bolt is right at 3-1/4 inches, or just at 3 inches if the lock washer is used. The Curt # C22321 isn't designed for a 2-1/2 inch receiver, so I'd recommend another option like # BX88312, which is actually designed specifically for a 2 inch reducer used in a a 2-1/2 inch receiver. I've linked you to a product description video.

  • Is There An Anti Rattle Device Designed To Limit Front To Back Movement At The Hitch?
We do have other anti rattle devices that we carry, but nothing specifically designed to limit fore/aft movement. If you have already tried The Blue Ox immobilizer # BX88312, I'm afraid I do not have a more effective anti rattle device that I can offer you. The immobilizer is pretty much the best of the best. That is the one we go to when all else fails typically. We do have the Gen-Y Anti rattle clamp # GY28XR which I have seen good results with. I do not see this working better than the...

  • Recommended Anti-Rattle Clamp for a 2-1/2" Hitch w/ a 2" Adapter
Yes, it will David so long as you're using a 2-1/2" hitch to 2" hitch adapter like item # e53YR. The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III item # BX88312 is only designed to be used with a 2-1/2" hitch and shank of 2" hitch adapter. If you are looking for a anti-rattle hitch collar I have two options listed below: 2-1/2" Hitch - B&W Anti-Rattle Clamp for 2-1/2" Hitch Receivers item # BW65FR 2" Hitch - etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar for 2" Hitch Receivers item # e38FV I would be...

  • Is it Safe To Use a 2-1/2 to 2 Inch Reducer Sleeve With a Weight Distribution Trailer Hitch?
There is no problem using a 2-1/2" to 2" Receiver Reducer Sleeve # e26YR with a weight distribution hitch. This way you will not need to replace your Shank # C17132 unless you have a significantly taller receiver on your new 3/4 ton truck. The Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III # BX88312 will allow you to remove the additional rattle you will notice in the receiver by using the additional reducer sleeve with your weight distribution hitch.

  • Using Anti-Rattle Devices with a 2-1/2 to 2 Inch Hitch Reducer and Extender
Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 6" Long Item # HR26 is at a fixed length no matter if you are strictly reducing or are also extending. It only has the 2 sets of pin holes; one set to pin the adapter into the hitch and one set for the accessory in the end of the adapter. The issue with using adapters is that they create an additional point of potential movement which amplifies the sloppiness. You can reduce that but you would need to use 2 anti-rattle devices....

Blue Ox actually makes a version of their Hitch Immobilizer III that is designed for 2-1/2 inch hitches using a 2 inch hitch adapter. For that you'd want the part # BX88312 which would work well for you.

  • Anti-Rattle Device for 2-1/2 Inch to 2 Inch Sleeve When Used with a Weight Distribution System
I do have an option for you but the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III part # BX88312 is the only device we have that will stabilize the reducer sleeve. If this will not work for you due to the position of the safety chain loops then the only other option, I would have is a wedge for the 2" shank, the Gen-Y Anti-Rattle Clamp part # GY88XR. Unfortunately, we would not have anything to help stabilize the 2-1/2" to 2" sleeve inside the receiver tube. The best option we have for you would...

  • Difference Between Blue Ox Immobilizer III and II for 2-1/2 inch Hitches
The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II # BX88225 is designed for applications where the hitch is 2-1/2 inch sized and you are using a 2-1/2 inch accessory. Whereas the part # BX88312 is for 2-1/2 inch hitches that are using an adapter to then use a 2 inch hitch accessory.

  • Best Stabilizer for a 2-1/2" Receiver Reduced Down to a 2" Accessory
It sounds like you have a 2-1/2" receiver on your 2016 Ram 2500 and have installed a reducer to fit your 2" accessory, and there is some sway. I have a solution for you. First, though, the etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Stabilizer for 2" Hitches, part # e99007, is not designed to be used with this kind of setup. The lip would not make decent contact to reduce sway as intended. Instead, I recommend the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III for 2-1/2" Hitch with 2" Adapter, part # BX88312....

  • Recommended Anti-Rattle Clamp for 2-1/2" Hitch Receivers
Yes, that is correct. The B&W Anti-Rattle Clamp for 2-1/2" Hitch Receivers item # BW65FR will indeed work with the standard B&W Tow & Stow's like the item # BWTS20049B you were looking at. The set screw type of set up is what the new anti-rattle devices are going to. They've proven extremely reliable and we haven't heard of any issues like what you're concerned with. B&W really stands by their products so I wouldn't hesitate to use this. However, if you're still up in the air we do have...

  • Recommended Anti-Rattle Device for a 2-1/2" Hitch Using a 2" Adapter
Hey Tracy, thanks for the picture! I am sorry but the etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar for 2" Hitch Receivers item # e38FV is not going to work for your set up. You need space behind the lip on your hitch receiver for the back side of the collar to clamp around. Instead you'll want to use the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III for 2-1/2" Hitch with 2" Adapter item # BX88312. I attached a picture below that will show you this anti-rattle device on an almost identical set up to yours.

  • Are the Blue Ox Immobilizer U-Bolts Made of Stainless Steel
I spoke with my contact at Blue Ox about the Immobilizer III # BX88312 and Immobilizer II # BX88224 anti-rattle devices. She confirmed that the U-bolts used with the Immobilizers are grade 5 steel, but they are not stainless steel. The nuts that are included with the Immobilizer are hex whiz lock nuts. The U-bolts are not designed to be long enough to add an additional nut to the bolt to lock the first nut. Since the nuts included are lock nuts, you would only need to use the included...

  • Will BOLT Hitch Locks Cause Wear on Hitch Pin Hole
BOLT does not have a version of their hitch locks that has a straight end. That's interesting that yours is rounding out the hitch pin's hole. There really shouldn't be enough friction between the hitch pin and the hitch pin hole to cause that type of wear. In general the hitch pin does not actually bear any of weight of the trailer since the tongue weight pins the ball mount into the hitch so well that no movement is allowed. To reduce movement which would cause potential wear an immobilizer...

I have seen this situation several times. There is nothing wrong with using a Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeve # C45405 with the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution # BLU59FR. You are not going to loose any weight capacity with this reducer sleeve. The reducer will cause a little more play but you will still have hitch play with a Blue Ox Track Pro Weight Distribution Shank for 2-1/2" Hitches # BLU26FR. For your 2-1/2 inch trailer hitch receiver and your 2 inch hitch extender, I recommend the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III for 2-1/2" Hitch with 2" Adapter # BX88312. This will allow you to use your current adapter with the sleeve, but will take the slop out of the combination. This is the best option for your specific application because you would need to go to the 24 inch extension # C45048 that you don't like the length of as your next best option.

I have some solutions for you, but I would not recommend using a ball mount like the # SHK34RR at the end of your Reese Titan extension. Although this is and others like it are designed to absorb road shock, there will be a lot of extra movement at the end of the extension. It would likely negate any benefit or make it worse. Even if the Immobilizer II # BX88225 did fit around your receiver, since it is for a 2-1/2" receiver opening anything that you put in the trailer hitch receiver would be too small for this to work properly. Instead I believe what you would need is the Immobilizer III # BX88312 which has a bracket that is 4" x 4" and is compatible with a 2" receiver opening. • Will Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III Fit on 2016 Ford F250 Factory Trailer Hitch Receiver
The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer III # BX88312 is a universal fit and we haven't had the opportunity to test it on a 2016 Ford F-250 factory trailer hitch so I can't verify how well it will fit on your truck. The same goes for a 9000 pound trailer since it doesn't actually carry a weight capacity rating.
